Department of Pathology (Laboratory of General Pathology & Pathological Anatomy)
The Department of Pathology (Laboratory of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy) of the Faculty of Medicine, AUTh, offers extensive teaching, diagnostic and research services. The teaching activities are addressed to the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry of the School of Health Sciences, AUTh, Erasmus programme students, specializing physicians (pathologists, cytopathologists, and other specialties with interest in clinicopathological correlation), PhD candidates, undergraduate students of the Nursing Services of the AHEPA and Hippokrateion hospitals, as well as postgraduate students of other Schools. Research interests:
Aetiopathogenesis and morphology (macroscopic and microscopic) of diseases of all systems of the human body. Clinicopathological correlation. Investigation of prognostic and predictive markers in various diseases. Molecular pathogenesis of cancer. Molecular markers and genotypic investigation of tumours. Translational research of cancer. The members of the Teaching Staff and the physicians of The National Health System of our Department have extensive research experience in specialized areas of Pathology, such as: mechanisms of inflammation, carcinogenesis, chronic liver diseases, haematological neoplasms, cancer of the digestive system, diseases of the breast and ovaries, nephritides, as well as peripheral nerve and skeletal muscle diseases. Methodology: histological examination, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, TMA construction, in situ hybridization, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), PCR-based investigation of DNA/RNA changes in extracts from biopsy and surgical specimens, next-generation sequencing (NGS) protocol design and implementation.
Main laboratory equipment:
Organized diagnostic and research sections of the Laboratory in Histopathology, Cytopathology, Histochemistry, Immunohistochemisty, Immunofluorescence, Molecular Histopathology and Confocal Microscopy.
Lab tests offered:
Histopathological examinations of biopsy and surgical specimens from patients of the AHEPA University Hospital. Consultation histopathological examinations of biopsy and surgical specimens from other laboratories and hospitals. Cytopathological examinations from patients of the AHEPA University Hospital and other hospitals. Immunohistochemical tests. Molecular tests (FISH and PCR-based methods). Autopsies.
